In Peter Schaffer's often disturbing play, Dr Martin Dysart, a provincial psychiatrist attempts to discover why young Alan Strang has taken to mutilating live horses. In probing Strang's psyche, he discovers that the source of the boy's obsession is his mother, who has raised Firth with a convoluted set of values. As he gets closer to the reason behind Firth's horrendous acts, Dysart discovers many previously locked-away secrets within himself.
